Which, I know, doesn't sound like a huge draw, but I was thinking about how my all-in-one, general-purpose factory wasn't set up to handle the massive influx of resources I got from the mining ship that factory helped me to build, and that it would really be more efficient to make the power plant a separate building, and then make individual factories for hulls, engines, weapons, and (especially) paint, and I realized that this sci-fi Minecraft clone was also a stealth city sim. When I last stopped playing, I was trying to work out the logistics of manufacturing the second- and third-tier components necessary to build a really powerful warship. Your ship designs have meaning, and the things you build have purpose and function. You mine minerals to build parts, and then use those parts to build other parts, and as time goes on your production chains and available resources increase, and with your greater wealth comes greater ambition, and your goals and achievements are limited only by your imagination.Įxcept in this game, you can build spaceships! And mine asteroids! And have bases on the surface of planets! It's a science fiction universe where you have a real sense of ownership and control over the technology. StarMade is a little like Minecraft with a science-fiction flair. In the grand scheme of things, it's probably not (yet) a great game, but it's gotten under my skin. Even when I'm not playing it, I'm thinking about it. I've sailed past the twenty-hour mark, and I could easily do twenty more. That was three days ago, and in the time since, I've played StarMade almost every waking hour. I figured it would be a shame to commit myself to playing this game when, if I but waited, a superior version would become available, especially since I have more than enough to occupy me in the meantime. Because it was still in early access, I decided I would not write about it for the blog just yet. Because I love voxel-based crafting games almost as much as I love 4X games, and because it was a very generous and thoughtful gift, I decided I would try it out. I hope you continue to do so.For my birthday, a friend of mine gave me the game Starmade. It's a ridiculous amount of fun watching someone else playing with my toys on youtube. Likewise those who have been downloading and enjoying my ships. If I start that build it will likely be a while before you, or anyone, sees me again.Īs always, I appreciate those who have been encouraging me. It looks like there is a lot of popular demand for a Galaxy class.

My son has asked for a Promethius, and I plan to give it to him. The deeper I go, the more rewarding it is. but I suspect I only have one or two more of the larger ships in me before I take a break for a couple weeks. This Miranda has probably taken twice as long as the previous version, and I'm not done yet. but that means I'm fussing over details I never considered in the previous build. The newer vessel is more powerful, better shielded, more fully decorated, better lit, and more combat-ready. It's striking to have my new motion picture era Miranda floating next to my recent TOS Miranda I've rendered angles and proportions I didn't even attempt in the older ship. Instead of getting faster, I'm getting slower as I dig deeper into the game balance and try to render finer and finer details. I did expect that as my experience increased, the builds would go faster. Somewhat to my surprise I find I'm pretty damn decent and getting better. when I started this hobby of rendering starships out of 1m blocks I had no idea how much fun it would be, how consuming, or whether I'd be any good at it.
