

Our engagement with the learners, brought out in each one of us, a character of modesty and appreciation. To be part of such a memorable event was glorious and remarkable. We also handed out stationery packs to every learner in the various schools and participated in all their fun activities, such as dancing, playing drums etcetera. This celebration was expressed by our Sixty –Seven minute school visit for Mandela.ĭuring the school visits we read stories and poems to the learners, we talked about Nelson Mandela, and the learners presented a play for us in celebration of MADIBA. The purpose of the event was to motivate learners about education and also to celebrate Madiba’s birthday. Sadie sits on the Universities Australia DVC Corporate Committee, has held a ministerial appointment on the Higher Education Standards Panel (2018-2021), was an inaugural member of TEQSA's Student Expert Advisory Group (2018), sat on the Universities Australia DVC/PVC Indigenous Committee (2021-22) and was the 2016-2018 President of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Postgraduate Association.

Sadie is passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and has worked at Monash University, Federation University, University of South Australia and, most recently, as Coordinator of the Indigenous Higher Education Pathways Program at the University of Southern Queensland. Sadie was a Fulbright Scholar based in the Kamakakūokalani Centre for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai’i Mānoa, has been a Columbia University Oral History Institute Summer Fellow, a National Library of Australia Norman McCann Summer Scholar, has held a Confucius China Studies Program Young Leaders Fellowship and as well as Columbia University's International Summer Program on Indigenous Peoples' Rights and Policy. Her research focuses on Indigenous methodologies, Cultural Safety, protecting Indigenous spoken knowledge and ethical research frameworks. Sadie is the President-Elect of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium (NATSIHEC) and sits on the Australian Research Council's College of Experts.Ī Wiradjuri scholar, Sadie was awarded her PhD in 2018, entitled Nothing About Us Without Us: Protecting Indigenous knowledges through oral histories and culturally safe research practices. She is the Chair of the Swinburne Indigenous Research Committee and the Cultural Safety Program Lead within the National Centre for Reconciliation Practice. Sadie Heckenberg is the Academic Director (Indigenous Research) and an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Senior Research Fellow within the Moondani Toombadool Centre (MTC) at Swinburne University of Technology.
